Greystone Mansion's grounds are open to the public, and the fall calendar includes both free access to the park and ticketed events.

Greystone Mansion is at 905 Loma Vista Drive. Visitors do not need a wedding invitation, a production credit, or a name on a list to enter the grounds.

Greystone's Public Access

Beverly Hills sells itself on privacy. Hedges, gates, long driveways that hide the house from the street. Greystone looks like it belongs to that same story. It was built in 1928 for the Doheny family, one of the era's oil fortunes, and it has spent decades since as a backdrop rather than a destination, leased to the American Film Institute starting in 1965 and appearing in film and television productions ever since. If your only exposure to the mansion has been through a screen, it makes sense to assume the doors are closed to you.

They aren't. The city dedicated Greystone as a public park in 1971, and the 18.5 acres surrounding the mansion have been open to residents since then. Although the building can look closed, the grounds are open to the public.

What's Actually Free

Here's what does not require a ticket, a reservation, or advance planning of any kind: the grounds. Greystone's park is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in winter), admission and parking are both free, and no reservation is needed to walk the formal gardens, the courtyard, or the pool area. You can show up on a Tuesday afternoon with no plan and still get the full landscape, the fountain, the view down toward the flats.

Tickets are required for entry inside the mansion or for special events on the grounds, but not for an ordinary park visit.

This Fall's Actual Calendar

Past the free daily access, the city runs a specific, dated program through Greystone and its sister landmark two miles south, Beverly Gardens Park. None of it is speculative. All of it is on the books:

• Greystone in the Movies, Thursday, Sept. 24, 6:30 p.m. A screening series that leans into the mansion's own history as a film location, held at the Greystone Theatre.
• Inside the Mansion, next self-guided tour date Sunday, Oct. 4. Timed entries at 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. let you walk the first floor and the recently restored Greystone Theatre, something the grounds pass alone doesn't include.
• Beverly Hills Art Show, Oct. 17 and 18, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. More than 245 artists exhibiting along four blocks of Beverly Gardens Park, with a beer and wine garden, food trucks, and free admission. The show has run every May and October for over fifty years.

Beverly Gardens Park is also where the city's ArtWalk guided tours run on select dates throughout the year, ten dollars a person, passing Yayoi Kusama's Hymn of Life: Tulips sculpture, which was recently refabricated in stainless steel and returned to its spot near the Lily Pond. Check the city's arts calendar for the next scheduled date before you plan around it.

Greystone has been a public park since 1971. It has also remained a filming location.

Visiting Greystone

Some parts of the calendar are free: a self-guided tour is included with the free park visit on the right day, and the Art Show is free entirely. The mansion's imposing appearance can make those no-cost options easy to overlook.

At this address, the grounds are open to the public, while entry to the mansion itself requires a ticket. The park around it does not.

How to Actually Use It This Season

If you've been meaning to see the grounds for years and never quite gotten around to it, the next six weeks make it easy to stop putting it off.

1. Walk the grounds for free anytime between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. No reservation, no ticket, no reason needed.
2. If you want the mansion interior, wait for the next self-guided tour on Oct. 4 and book a timed entry between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
3. Clear your calendar for Oct. 17 and 18 if you haven't been to the Art Show before. It's free, it's four blocks long, and it draws artists from well outside Los Angeles.

None of this requires the kind of access that Beverly Hills is usually associated with. You can walk the grounds during park hours or plan around a scheduled event, both of which are a much lower bar than the gates suggest.

Public Access at Greystone

Beverly Hills has spent decades building a reputation for privacy, and most of that reputation is earned. But the city also runs one of the more generous public calendars on the Westside, tucked behind an address that looks like the exception to every rule about access here. Greystone offers public access to its grounds alongside ticketed events and tours. That means a visit need not be tied to an event or tour.
